Job Details

FUNCTION: The database administrator is a key member of the Porter data team who manages the databases, processes and data warehouse across environments. The role ensures data is available and meets the performance expectations of the business and technology teams.  The database administrator requires a mindset for rigorous management of data technology systems, automation and problem solving with a focus on supporting an ever-increasing amount of data and increasing complexity in its use to support Porter in its growth. The role will leverage many products and services offered by AWS and Google to maintain and expand the data ecosystem


  • Support and maintain databases, data processes and data warehouse
  • Update database versions, schemas and data models for the technology teams
  • Create maintenance, backup and data retention plans 
  • Optimize and tune databases and processes for optimal performance
  • Implement and apply database standards, security and policies
  • Setup, coordinate and support data for testing and upgrades
  • Provide support for databases and data processes after hours
  • Monitor production environments for performance and data integrity issues
  • Support and assist data development on applications, reports and integration projects
  • Assist in improving data quality and integrity in the databases and data warehouse
  • Provide guidance and assistance to business and technology groups on their data needs
  • Support multiple projects, working with the technology teams, project managers, and business groups
  • Any data and data process management duties as requested by the Director

  • Fostering Communication: Listening and communicating openly, honestly, and respectfully with different audiences, promoting dialogue and building consensus.
  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or similar degree preferred
  • 3 to 5 years experience in database administration for on-premise or cloud-based databases
  • 3 to 5 years experience design and methodologies for databases and data warehousing
  • 3 to 5 years of experience using AWS products and services such as S3, RDS, Lambda, Redshift, and Kinesis
  • 3 to 5 years of experience supporting  big data or data warehouse solutions
  • 3 to 5 years SQL experience with on-premise and cloud-based database systems such as SQL Server, Postgresql, Redshift or BigQuery
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with on-premise or cloud-based ETL products
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with database modelling and software design
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with open-source languages such python or scala
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, to communicate with business stakeholders, project teams and project managers
  • 3 + years of experience creating and maintaining database systems
  • 3 + years of experience developing and administering database with SQL Server, PostGreSQL, Redshift, or BigQuery
  • 2+ years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) products and services, especially Redshift, Kinesis, Lambda, EMR, or RDS
  • 2+ years of experience with using python or other open source languages
