Job Details

FUNCTION: Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for producing accurate and timely consolidated financial statements and other financial information for use by Management and the Board of Directors. The Assistant Controller will manage the full cycle accounting group and ensure proper processes and procedures are in place.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Manage general accounting team

  • Manage compilation of the monthly financial package, executive commentaries and high-level variance analyses along with preparation of monthly board report

  • Ensure compliance with internal and external financial policies and regulations including all major Balance Sheet reconciliations and sub-ledgers

  • Primary responsibility for year-end audits and liaising with external tax advisors to prepare corporate tax returns

  • Review and manage Sales Tax processes and technical applications in all corporate jurisdictions

  • Oversee the continuous improvement of Accounting and Financial processes and the development of the team to achieve best practices and the highest level of customer support

  • Support external and Government audits

  • Monitor and support all day-to-day tasks of the team members

  • Coach and mentor team members and complete performance management processes in accordance with corporate requirements

  • Hire, train and evaluate employees to enhance their performance, development and work product. Address performance issues when needed

  • Ensure all major processes within the team are cross-trained

  • Identify, investigate and research technical accounting and financial reporting issues, and provide recommendations to the Controller, and members of the finance team and prepare accounting memos as required.

  • Assist with development and implementation of effective internal controls to assure safeguarding of assets and reliability of financial statements and to detect fraud and errors

  • Prepare ad hoc analysis and financial reports as required

  • Actively participate in Porter’s Safety Management System (SMS) including reporting hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations; understand, comply and promote the Company Safety Policy

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidate should possess a Bachelor in Accounting with a CPA designation

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in financial accounting area, ideally in both public accounting and industry

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices including IFRS

  • Experience with relevant accounting packages and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines

  • Ability to maintain highly confidential information

  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials

  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, Management and external agencies

  • Sound analytical ability coupled with creative problem-solving skills

  • Ongoing ability to make tactical decisions positively affecting day-to-day operations

  • Self-starter, ability to work independently and perform at optimum levels
