Job Details
FUNCTION: Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting (“the Manager”), the Staff Accountant will be a professional member, and an integral part, of Porter’s Finance Team. This role will work closely with the Manager to support the company’s financial reporting and general accounting requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Complete the Company’s monthly general accounting financial statement close process through preparation of and input of standard and complex journal entries, account reconciliations and reporting packages
Actively seek and implement process improvements to ensure tasks are being completed efficiently and accurately
Perform the processing of monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, fixed assets additions and depreciation and recording of adjusting and reclassification journal entries, where necessary
Prepare monthly report analyzing Company performance and KPIs for distribution to the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership team
Support and build rapport with operational managers by evaluating results, determining accounting treatment for operational issues and explaining such treatments as required
Prepare the Company’s quarterly and annual financial statements and note disclosures
Support external audit process by preparing audit support packages, and related material
Identify, investigate and research technical accounting and financial reporting issues and provide recommendations to the Manager and members of the finance and operations teams
Assist with the development and implementation of corporate accounting policies and internal control framework
Maintain an in-depth understanding of and remain aware of technical developments impacting the Company’s financial reporting and regulatory framework
Draft accounting position papers recommending treatment for new accounting issues, changes to accounting policy and new processes across the Company
Under the direction of the Manager, undertake a review and testing of internal control framework. Where required, provide recommendations for developing and implementing key and compensating controls designed to safeguard company assets, detect and correct errors, and promote the overall reliability of financial statements
Actively participate in Porter’s Safety Management System (SMS) including, reporting hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations; understand, comply and promote the Company Safety Policy

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors or post-graduate degree in business or related studies
Completion of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario’s (CPAO), Pre-requisite Education requirement as outlined in the CPAO’s regulations and bylaws
Successful completion, or in the process of completing the CPAO’s Professional Education Program (PEP) requirement as outlined in the CPAO’s regulations and bylaws
Actively pursuing the CPAO designation and qualifications as a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant and Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA)
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an equivalent position.
Accounting or assurance skills acquired through experience with a Canadian Public Accounting firm considered an asset
Strong technical knowledge and understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
Experience with business consolidations and multi-entity reporting structures
Superior Microsoft Office skills
Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn Great Plains
Ability to participate in pre-approved and self-study CPD activities
