Job Description

FUNCTION:


The Manager, Data Development is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of key data integrations, data warehouse development, reports and systems.

In this position, you will play an integral role at Porter, and have the opportunity to work with many departments and groups in order to design and provide highly effective, efficient, and reliable solutions.

As the Manager, Data Development, you will lead a passionate team of developers and analysts to provide valuable technical expertise, guidance, and direction.

The ideal candidate will also have a strong data background with an excellent understanding of database  systems, integrations, analysis & design, database methodologies and software development lifecycles.

The role also calls for someone who has a balance of strong technical experience with a good understanding of business needs. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Manage and motivate a team of data developers and analysts, providing them the necessary direction, guidance and tools for success

  • Work closely with business stakeholders and end users to identify and define business requirements

  • Manage a variety of projects from different areas of the business, including initiatives that have  ambiguous requirements or require negotiating with multiple stakeholders

  • Lead projects and work efforts to provide resource estimates, and ensure initiatives are delivered on-time, with quality and within budget and scope

  • Collaborate with peers within architecture, development, reporting, business analysis, quality assurance and project management

  • Ensure development and system integrations adhere to best practices and standards from a design, architecture, monitoring, and security perspective

  • Review and approve design and development work, ensuring the quality of technical/functional documentation and solution designs

  • Act as a point of contact for technical and functional issues as well as high priority requests

  • Oversee the quality and integrity of data when critical production issues arise, ensuring proper communication with other business and technical teams

  • Participate in the evaluation of new and emerging technology

  • Work with data architecture to identify technical debt as well as new and emerging technology opportunities in the data landscape and manage initiatives to implement them

  • Display a wide degree of technical skill and creativity, and demonstrate technical leadership to the team

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or mathematics, engineering (or equivalent) preferred

  • 8+ years technology experience with hands-on relational database and data warehouse design, development and administration

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with 2+ years experience leading a team of 2 or more resources

  • Strong knowledge and experience with big data and cloud base data systems 

  • Experience with working on multiple concurrent developments in a fast-paced environment

  • Advanced and creative problem solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in design, development, testing, and support

  • Experience with methodologies and techniques for data modeling, process flows, requirements gathering, analysis, design, testing, and implementation of information systems

  • Ability to understand and communicate the business impact of technical issues

  • Experience collaborating with Project Managers, Business Analysts, Architects, Technical Leads, and Vendors

  • Curious and inquisitive with strong analytic and decision making abilities

  • Motivated and self-starter



TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Experience in all stages of the software development life cycle including architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance

  • In-depth knowledge and experience building database systems, data warehouses, data integrations, and reporting systems using on-premise and cloud technologies

  • Experienced with database design and architecture for enterprise systems, including distributed data and data lake architectures

  • Experience with real-time data integration, data pipes and ETL processes

  • Experience with consuming SOAP and REST API web services

  • Experience with event driven architecture

  • Experience with performance baselines and optimization

  • Experience with debugging, and troubleshooting production issues

  • Experience with source control management systems and continuous integration/deployment environments

  • Experience with open source languages such as Python, Scala or R

  • Experience with AWS products and services including Redshift, Kinesis, Lambda, and RDS
